All assessment is a learned skill, and the ability to incorporate this skill into massage sessions enhances the quality of the treatment given. Palpation assessment is the use of touch to examine the body. Our hands are our most versatile and exquisite assessment tools. They need to be trained to interpret what they perceive accurately. For the therapeutic massage professional, palpation is an essential and continuous process, and the hands become skilled with experience. The main considerations for palpation in basic massage are the ability to differentiate between types of tissue, the ability to distinguish differences of tissue texture in the same tissue types, and the ability to palpate through various layers from superficial to deep. We will be doing several fun activities to encourage this sense as it develops into a skill!

Course Objectives:  Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Understand that hands are our most versatile, exquisite assessment tool;
  • Begin to develop the ability to differentiate between types of tissue;
  • Begin to develop the ability to distinguish differences of tissue texture in same tissue types;
  • Begin to develop the ability to palpate through tissue layers from superficial to deep;
  • Understand that the massage therapist’s entire self must become sensitive to subtle differences in the client’s body;
  • Discern that with palpation what is going on must be felt and not thought about because too much thinking shifts awareness away from kinesthetic input;
  • Identify and address during massage elements relating to function and dysfunction of posture through palpation;
  • Complete a palpation assessment of the various layers, tissues and systems of the body; and
  • Use massage application as palpation assessment.
