The class will start with wood turning basics emphasizing use of lathe and turning tools plus sharpening, general spindle and hollowing work on selected projects. For intermediate and advanced students, bowl projects include hollow form, natural edge, free form and decorating enhancements. Emphasis placed on safety, proper technique and shop practices.

This intermediate to advanced wood turning course allows the student to explore the art and possibilities of segmented wood turning and to improve their skill in the use of lathe tools and machinery. The student will design and execute projects using various segmenting techniques include stacked ring construction, open segment construction, simple stave construction, or compound miter stave construction of bowls, vessels and sculptural objects. Emphasis is placed on proper technique, safety, and shop policies.   SAFETY: For safety purposes students are required to cover their eyes with eye protection, wear closed toed shoes, and secure or remove any loose clothing, jewelry, or long hair, which might get caught in moving machinery.  SUPPLIES: Students must provide all lumber, finishes, hardware, and supplies needed for their project(s). Some material and supplies will be for sale in class. Eye protection is required to starting the first class meeting. All other supplies below are recommended for your woodworking pleasure: calculator (basic style), ear protection, clipboard,  graph paper drawing equipment , pencils (black, red), dust protection, and a 3 ring binder. TEXT: “The Art of Segmented Wood Turning” by Malcolm Tibbetts is the recommended text and can be purchased in the student bookstore or online through a variety of vendors (such as amazon.com).  Text price is approximately $20.  Other reference materials will be provided by the instructor during the course.

This is a structured course that will allow a student additional class time to work on a current or past project that you were unable to complete while enrolled in classes offered by Woodworking Manufacturing Technologies. This will provide you the opportunity to take advantage of additional class time and equipment, as well as access to a WMT Instructor to assist in the successful completion of your project. Prerequisite is WMT 101 or WMT 151, with Tony or Carl's approval. They must have completed 101 or 151.
